The Allison Model AG9130 Ship Service Gas Turbine Generator Set was designed to meet specifications for the DDG 51 Class destroyer of the U.S. Navy. The specifications called for a “turnkey” unit which required only fluid and electrical interfaces with the ship to operate. The fitting of all of the controls, voltage regulating and ancillary equipment on to a single foundation resulted in a cluttered and difficult to maintain set. This paper discusses the program initiated by the Navy to improve the maintainability of the AG9130. It details the changes which have already been made and those currently proposed. It also provides some insight into possible future modifications.
